Because Peter Pan is definitely alive and skiing or snowboarding at a resort near you and of course, he’s single. You’ll find him with Tinkerbell at the bar next to Benjamin Button lost in Never Never Land in the pursuit of youth, theirs and others, on a forever winter cycle. Like more resort style destinations, ski towns operate within a fantasy bubble. The town economy relies on that bubble as it is what lures holiday makers looking to escape the reality of day-to-day life with some time out throwing themselves like a super hero down a slope and living to tell the tale. No one wants to be reminded of work and mortgages when on vacation. Some don’t even want to be reminded they have a spouse so beware the ‘single above the snowline’ married human. When you see a kite catch the wind and swoop up into the air, you’re witnessing lift. You can feel the forward acceleration in the pull on your end of the string. Likewise, the mainsail and jib harness wind energy with their aerodynamic shapes that puff out on one side when the wind hits them. You also might notice that the kite flies angled to the wind, just as the mainsail and jib capture wind when tacking.

Sailing aficionados use two prominent — yet often disputed — theories to explain how exactly the wind interaction generates lift: Bernoulli’s theorem and Newton’s Third Law. Bernoulli’s theorem, also called the Longer Path Explanation, explains lift in terms of high and low air pressures on either side of the sail. Imagine the front of the boat angled upwind, or into the wind.

As the breeze hits the sails, the air particles rush over both sides. Theoretically, the air particles moving across the outer, convex side of the sail have a longer distance to travel in the same amount of time as the particles moving across the inner, concave side. If the particles on the outer side are traveling farther in the same amount of time, they must have a higher velocity, or speed, than the particles on the other side.

These higher-velocity particles have more room to spread out, forming a low-pressure area.

Email When I ended a five-year relationship in the fall of , I had no desire to rush back into the dating scene. But there I was, six months later, trying to get out of my comfort zone by skiing with complete strangers at a chairlift speed-dating event. I show up and pin a ribbon indicating my age group 18 to 35 to my jacket, and an event organizer matches me with someone in my age bracket. Then my date and I head off to ride the lifts together and ski any runs we choose.

If we like each other, we can ski together as long as we want. Sitting in Saturday-morning ski traffic on I the day of the event, I was hopeful about getting back into the outdoor dating scene but worried that my dates would leave me in a spray of snow. My biggest anxiety, though, was that I had no idea how people would pair up to ride the lifts together. What if nobody picked me? When I arrived at the bottom of the lift, I was surprised to see so many other speed daters milling around.

More than people had signed up, with an almost equal split of men to women and far more skiers than snowboarders.

The man dangles helplessly from the ski lift But unfortunately, according to reports, it appeared the chairlift’s fold-down seat was not in the correct lowered-down position – causing the man to partially fall through the resulting gap as he attempted to board the lift.

I practically learned to ski there. Bear Rocks had only one slope and one trail. I do not remember the names. The main slope was a straight shot down the face, somewhat flat at the top and bottom with a decent intermediate pitch in the middle. I am a little fuzzy on this but I believe there was a rope tow on the gentle grade between the lodge and chair base that served as a beginner area.

The Lodge was a beautiful, multi-level stone and wood building that doubled as the Bear Rocks Common in the summer.
